Top Ten Maintenance Tips for a Bunn Tying Machine

Use quality twine with proper breaking strengths. We suggest BUNN 10 Ply Poly/Cotton Blend MG (Machine Grade) with a breaking strength around 43 LBS and knot strength around 33 LBS. This will ensure your bundles stay together better. By using a heavier twine this should also reduce damaging the edge of the products being tied.
Change your knife blade frequently. A sharp knife blade increases the life of your machine. Dull knife blades cause several problems,
- increased wear on pivot screws.
- Improper knots.
- Wasted material due to poor knots and loose bundles.
- Higher maintenance costs.
- Lost productivity.
Clean your machines once a week. Use an air hose to blow the dust out of your machine. A clean machine will operate freely and tie more consistently.
Oil each oil hole with two drops of SAE 30 light oil. By using only two drop of oil in each hole will help reduce the collection of dust on oily parts, which will keep your machine cleaner.
Replace your springs on a regular basis. This will help reduce your breakdowns.
Purchase spring kits when available. This ensures you have ordered all the proper springs for the machine. Advise serial number when ordering
Set up a maintenance schedule with frequency. Refer to owners manual
Ensure the machine is threaded properly. This ensures proper tension during the wrapping cycle.
When tying a large or heavy bundle do not make several ties in the same spot. Move the bundle slightly forward so the knots won’t get caught together.
Always use new parts when replacing a broken or worn part. When using a used part, you are transferring a problem from the machine you took it off of and transferring it to the machine to your working on. This creates needless problems for both you and the machine.

A used machine purchase that ended up needing knowledgeable repair brought me to B H Bunn Co. I first talked with the owner John over the phone, which he provided his time generously to go over the machine and its possible issues/fixes. I then followed up with bringing it to their business location where John skillfully went thru all the mechanicals and corrected the issues competently. My experience with this company is most likely different from other people. I did not do business with this company, instead I interacted with the owner and employees due to a personal emergency. My car recently broke down and I pulled into their parking lot. The owner (my apologies for not remembering her name) was very kind to me. She offered a space to me inside her building where I could sit and wait for a tow truck. An employee of hers came out and brought me water during my wait and offered kind words of encouragement. These two people were great ambassadors for the company and if their business practices are anything like their hospitality, B.H. Bunn is a place to do business. Thank you all for your kindness towards a veteran in a time of need.
